Great Whites in the Gulf!

Ready for Another Shark Movie?
Chester Moore is legend in the outdoor world of Port Arthur’s gulf, marsh and wood vistas. This award-winning wildlife journalist is a conservationist and speaker who is releasing a documentary. “Great White Sharks in the Gulf” will premier at the free Museum of the Gulf Coast Family Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025. Screenings will be at noon and 1 p.m.
Moore timed this to honor the June 20, 1975 release of the blockbuster “Jaws,” the movie that made every swimmer consider caution in the water. Here’s Moore’s blog on the project:
Great Whites in the Gulf!
Just off the coast of Sabine Pass, the Gulf waters are home to a surprising variety of sharks. Shark fishermen have historically loved the surf out of Sea Rim State Park and McFaddin Beach for the variety of sharks in these waters.
What’s Out There?
● Blacktip Sharks are often seen jumping from the water. They are fast, active sharks found close to shore during warmer months.
● Spinner Sharks are for spinning leaps while feeding. They are slim, quick, and can be mistaken for blacktips.
● Bull Sharks are stocky and strong. They live in both salt and fresh water and swim far up rivers.
● Scalloped Hammerheads are identified by their curved hammer-shaped head. Look for them moving in groups. They prefer deeper waters.
In 2005, a local charter captain reported something that many found hard to believe: a great white shark off the Texas coast. While controversial at the time, that sighting sparked an ongoing interest and investigation into whether these famous predators really did roam the Gulf.
Great White Sharks are REAL!
Years later, it’s clear. Great white sharks are a real, though rare, part of the Gulf of Mexico’s ecosystem.
To tell that story, we invite you to a special event:
Gulf Great White Sharks: Return of an Icon
Years later, it’s clear. Great white sharks are a real, though rare, part of the Gulf of Mexico’s ecosystem.
This family day showing marks the official debut of my new documentary I produced, wrote and narrated. Paul Fuzinski filmed it. It explores the return of great white sharks to Gulf waters, including sightings along the Texas coast.
This free event offers two screenings, plus family-friendly activities and educational booths. It’s a great opportunity for shark enthusiasts, students, families and curious minds to learn more about one of nature’s most iconic animals.
We hope to see you there!
